Preparing for Post-Operation

Preparing for Post-Operation

If you or a loved one will be having a joint replacement performed, there are a few things you should know about preparing your environment before you return home:

The Rest Area

The area where you plan to rest needs to be set up in an effective manner.  It is best to sit in a firm, high-sitting chair. Any chair that causes you to sink in or that is difficult to get out of could be problematic for your recovery. Use of an ottoman or leg rest may not be recommended, depending on the type of joint replacement surgery you have done. Make sure to keep a table nearby with essential materials you may need to avoid getting out of your chair, including a phone, tissues, water, reading materials or a television remote, as well as your prescriptions. A backscratcher and extended reach grabber might also be helpful.

The Room

Furniture should be rearranged prior to the surgery to allow for easy movement throughout the rooms, but don’t be on the move too much! It is also a good idea to make prior arrangements for an enthusiastic pet so that it doesn’t cause accidental harm. Loose rugs and cords should be temporarily removed until recovery is over.

Managing post-op symptoms

It is important to follow all instructions about your medications and wound care. The affected area should be kept clean at all times, and dressings should be changed as directed by the doctor. It is also important to keep track of your body temperature after surgery. A persistent fever, chills, or excessive drainage from the wound could be signs of an infection. Leg pain or swelling away from the treated area could be a sign of a serious blood clot. Be sure to keep your doctor informed on any such pain.

We at Midwest Center for Joint Replacement are here to help you and to answer any questions you may have. We will be very thorough in explaining the above information as well as post-operation wound care for your joint replacement.
