Michael E. Berend, MD

Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon |
Co-Founder, Midwest Center for Joint Replacement

Michael Berend, MD specializes in total knee replacement and partial knee replacement surgery. He co-founded Midwest Center for Joint Replacement (MCJR) in 2015, with locations in Indianapolis & Bloomington. He is dedicated to advancing joint replacement techniques and improving patient outcomes. With over 15,000 knee replacement surgeries performed, Dr. Berend has been recognized as one of the top 22 knee replacement surgeons in the United States.

Michael E. Berend, MD, is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon and the co-founder of Midwest Center for Joint Replacement, with locations in Indianapolis and Bloomington. Berend was called to a career in joint replacement surgery 32 years ago.

Education & Training

Dr. Berend’s journey in medicine began with his love of science and research. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Hanover College, where he also played basketball and ran cross country. He gained early research experience at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis and later pursued his medical degree at Duke University School of Medicine, where he was:

  • Inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society, representing the top 10% of his class.
  • Selected to deliver the commencement speech at his graduation.

He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center, followed by a joint replacement fellowship at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery in Mooresville, Indiana.

Professional Achievements & Contributions

  • Surgical Expertise: Performed over 15,000 knee replacement procedures.
  • Innovator in Orthopedics: Contributed to the design of multiple knee and partial knee implant systems.
  • Educator & Trainer: Trained over 3,000 surgeons in advanced knee replacement techniques.
  • Published Researcher: Authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, advancing orthopedic surgery.
  • Prestigious Memberships: Member of The Knee Society, a distinction held by only a select group of surgeons.
  • Global Impact: Regularly travels to teach and develop surgical programs worldwide.

Berend has been recognized as one of the top 22 knee replacement surgeons in the United States.

Philosophy & Passion for Patient Care

Dr. Berend’s practice is guided by MCJR’s motto: “Taking the Pain out of Joint Replacement.” His mission is to help patients regain mobility and improve their quality of life through innovative, patient-focused care.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Berend is deeply committed to medical mission work. Through Team Hope in Motion and Faith in Practice, he leads surgical teams in Guatemala, performing free knee replacement surgeries for underserved people.

Through these experiences, Berend has great joy seeing people walk with less pain and helping relieve the burden and limitations of degenerative joint disease. This is why we exist at MCJR. He is humbled to walk alongside patients in their healing journey.

Personal Life & Interests

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Berend was introduced to medicine at an early age by his grandfather, a pediatrician at The Ohio State University. His early medical experiences at Columbus Children’s Hospital and in pediatric research shaped his passion for surgery.

Dr. Berend and his brother, Dr. Keith Berend, also an orthopedic surgeon, co-lead the annual Duke University Joint Replacement Symposium, named in honor of their late mother, Emily.

Now in his third decade as a Hoosier, Dr. Berend enjoys cycling, flying, and serving in Redeemer Presbyterian Church. A licensed pilot with over 32 years of experience, he shares his adventurous spirit with his wife, Julie, and their three children.
