About Dr. Berend
Michael E. Berend, MD, is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon and the co-founder of Midwest Center for Joint Replacement, with two locations in Indianapolis and Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Berend’s surgical expertise includes total and partial knee replacement and total hip replacement. He has performed over 10,000 joint replacements in his 25-year career. Berend has been recognized as one of the top knee replacement surgeons in the United States.
Dr. Berend studied chemistry at Hanover College and went on to pursue orthopedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center, where he represented the top 10% of his medical school class. He completed his orthopedic training at Duke University and a joint replacement fellowship at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery in Mooresville, Indiana. He founded and co-leads the annual Duke University joint replacement symposium, named after his late mother Emily.
Berend is deeply passionate about his career and using his orthopedic expertise to help those in need. He helps lead Team Hope in Motion, a Christian medical mission organization that works with Faith in Practice to perform free joint replacements in Guatemala. To date, he has completed 25 international trips.
In addition to being a successful surgeon, Dr. Berend is a pilot with 42 years of experience. He enjoys visiting his three amazing children with his wife, Julie. He is active in Redeemer Presbyterian Church and enjoys cycling, having ridden and raced his bike across the US a number of times.
