Meet Dr. Michael Berend

Dr. Michael Berend is one of the founding surgeons of Midwest Center for Joint Replacement. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in partial knee, total knee, and total hip replacement surgery.

Dr. Berend has always loved science and health. He studied chemistry at Hanover College, then went on to Duke University Medical Center to pursue orthopedic surgery, representing the top 10% of his medical school class. Known by his classmates for his charismatic personality, he was chosen to be the graduation commencement speaker. Berend moved to Mooresville to complete a fellowship in joint replacement surgery at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery, then continued to practice there for 16 years.

Not only is Dr. Berend an expert in his craft, but he is also an innovator. During the past decade, he has helped design multiple hip, knee, and partial knee implant systems. He has trained over 3,000 surgeons in his specialized surgical techniques and has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals. He is 1 of 50 members in the USA of both the Knee Society and the Hip Society. Dr. Berend has been recognized by his peers as one of the top surgeons in North America.

Dr. Berend is deeply passionate about his career. He travels internationally with Team Hope in Motion, a medical mission organization performing free joint replacements around the world, one of the most fulfilling projects in his life. Sounds like he has a lot of free time right? Somehow, Dr. Berend has also managed to become a pilot. He has been flying for over 32 years. When he’s not up in the air, he’s raising three amazing children with his wife Julie. He is active in Redeemer Presbyterian Church and enjoys cycling.
