Dr. Penrose, Dr. Berend, and a team of healthcare practitioners spent last week in Guatemala with the medical missions non-profits Team Hope in Motion and Faith in Practice. Together, they changed the lives of nearly 100 patients in less than a week!
Near the beginning of the week, the team got a surprise visit from Victor, a former patient whose life was changed by the surgery he received in a previous mission trip with Team HIM. His testimony was a powerful reminder of the impact their work has, not just physically, but spiritually as well.
By the end of surgery day 1, the team had already performed 24 surgeries, including knee, hip, and foot and ankle procedures.
Reminders of Hope
Many patients arrive with decades-long injuries and pains that have been left untreated. These chronic issues do not just affect their quality of life, but their very livelihood. One such patient was Marco, a man injured in a horse accident years ago. In 2019, he realized he could no longer work in the fields, leaving his wife to figure out how to keep food on the table and their kids in school. This week, however, Marco was given a life-changing surgery. His ability to work again is within reach!
Later in the week, several doctors visited Marco in his home. Seeing Marco not only recovering but already planning to return to work was a poignant reminder of why they do this work.
It is not just about surgeries; it is about restoring hope and dignity to individuals and families.

Fighting for Restoration
The team was struck by the many family members, friends, and neighbors who traveled with each patient.
“They showed up so our patients could show up,” Team HIM said in their blog. “They sat in prayer, walked the halls, and waited while our team performed procedures. They met with our doctors during post-up, and you could feel their appreciation for the work being done.”

The gratitude and determination of their patients were palpable all week. From the prayers before surgery to the first steps post-op, every moment reminded the medical staff that this mission was about far more than just medicine—it was about transforming lives, restoring dignity, and answering prayers.
