Traveling the World after Joint Replacement: J. Kevin O’Kane
Kevin is no stranger to the world of orthopedics. Though he’s always lived an active and healthy lifestyle, his knees have given him trouble since high school. Kevin had a successful career as a manufacturers rep for plumbing supplies in Indiana. But persistent knee problems had him in and out of orthopedic offices for decades.
Struggling with Years of Joint Pain
Before finding Dr. Berend, Kevin had already had two tibia osteotomy knee surgeries and one knee replacement. A previous surgeon had suggested Kevin go to the “rock stars of orthopedic surgery” in the Mooresville area to take a look at his knee, so Kevin met with Dr. Berend. That meeting was the start of something different — a feeling of personalized care and confidence. Soon after, Kevin underwent another knee replacement surgery with Dr. Berend.
“I was very happy with my knee replacements and continued to full activities,” he said.
Finding Relief after Hip Replacement
Unfortunately, Kevin’s active lifestyle eventually led him to a hip injury. When the time came to address his hip, he was referred again, this time to Dr. Berend’s partner at Midwest Center for Joint Replacement, Dr. Lackey, for a hip replacement.
“Dr. Lackey made me familiar with the replacement procedures, and I was very comfortable in his care,” Kevin said. “Also, his staff was very helpful in returning phone calls and arranging appointments for me.”
The outcome was better than expected; his hip replacement recovery was easier than with his knee replacements.
“I was back on my feet in a few weeks and after a couple months able to resume my active lifestyle,” he said.
Kevin lives far from the MCJR Indy office, but he says it has always been well worth the drive.
“From my first steps inside their office, I’ve always felt comfortable with the Midwest Center for Joint Replacement,” he said. “I’ve always been greeted by my middle name and never had to wait more than just a few minutes for X-rays or any other consultation.”
Kevin spreads the word whenever he can.
“I’ve always told all my friends that this is the best place for me to receive treatment for my orthopedic situations. I have recommended a couple friends and a cousin for their joint replacements,” he said. “I also like the fact that the doctors are active beyond their medical practice and give back to the community as well as outside of the country their services.”
Kevin hasn’t slowed down; in fact, maybe he’s sped up! Since his surgery, he’s been able to travel around the country and in various parts of the world. He’s found great joy in being able to travel and enjoy life pain-free. Kevin’s story is a great example of persistence in finding relief.
