About Dr. Berend
Michael E. Berend, MD, is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon and the co-founder of Midwest Center for Joint Replacement, with two locations in Indianapolis and Bloomington, Indiana.
Dr. Berend always loved science and health. He studied chemistry at Hanover College and went on to pursue orthopedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center, where he represented the top 10% of his medical school class. Known for his charismatic personality, Berend was chosen to be the graduation commencement speaker. He completed his Orthopaedic training at Duke University and a joint replacement fellowship at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery. He has performed over 10,000 joint replacements in his 25-year career. He has been recognized as one of the top knee replacement surgeons in the United States. He founded and co-leads the annual Duke University joint replacement symposium naming it after his late mother Emily.
Dr. Berend is deeply passionate about his career. He travels internationally every year, having completed over 25 trips to serve those in need. Berend helps lead Team Hope in Motion, a Christian medical mission organization performing free joint replacements in Guatemala.
In addition to being a successful surgeon, Dr. Berend is a pilot. He has been flying for over 42 years. When he’s not up in the air, he’s visiting his three amazing children with his wife, Julie. He is active in Redeemer Presbyterian Church and enjoys cycling, having ridden and raced his bike across the US a number of times.
