If you’re living with arthritis, you’re likely familiar with the stiffness, swelling, and pain that can come and go—or sometimes stay for good. As a hip and knee specialist at Midwest Center for Joint Replacement (MCJR), I often meet patients who have been managing arthritis pain for years and are wondering: “How do I know when it’s time for joint replacement?”
It’s a great question—and the answer is different for everyone. Here’s what I tell my patients.
Start with Conservative Treatment
In the early stages of arthritis, we typically recommend non-surgical treatments. These include:
- Over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatories
- Cortisone injections
- Physical therapy to improve strength and mobility
- Activity modification to reduce stress on the joint
- Weight loss, which can significantly ease joint pressure
These approaches can go a long way in managing symptoms, but they don’t stop the progression of arthritis. At some point, these options may no longer provide the relief you need.
Key Signs It’s Time to Consider Joint Replacement
You may be ready for a joint replacement if:
- Pain interferes with your daily life. Whether it’s walking the dog, climbing stairs, or standing at the sink, when everyday tasks become painful, it’s time for a deeper conversation.
- You experience pain at rest or at night. Arthritis pain that continues even when you’re off your feet, or keeps you from sleeping, is a red flag that the joint has become severely damaged.
- Your joint feels unstable or stiff. If you notice a grinding sensation, limited range of motion, or feel that your joint might give out, these are signs that the damage is more advanced.
- X-rays confirm significant joint damage. Imaging can help us see how much cartilage has worn away and whether the joint is structurally compromised.
- You’ve tried everything else. When injections, therapy, and medications stop working—or work only briefly—joint replacement may be the most effective and lasting solution.
The Goal Is to Get You Moving Again
Joint replacement surgery is not about “giving up”—it’s about getting your life back. Whether it’s your hip or your knee, replacing the joint can reduce pain, restore motion, and help you return to the activities you enjoy most.
At MCJR, we take pride in offering advanced techniques and same-day surgeries that make recovery smoother and faster for our patients. If joint replacement is right for you, we’ll guide you through every step with compassion and clarity.
